How to make a family based stair in Revit

So – you always wanted to have a Stair Family in Revit. Like a real family, something you could load just like a – Family.

That can be done, no dirty tricks, it has all been in there for the last 10 years…

Step 1

Open an empty Revit project and create a stair. Any stair. Does not matter.

Export your result to IFC – go Application Menu > Export to IFC

Close your Project and open the IFC file. (Application Menu > Open > IFC)

001

Step 2

You may now see something like this

002

003Now select the stair and look at your ribbon – notice the Edit In-Place button.

Click on it – congratulations, you have created an In-Place stair.

 004

Step 3

Now we make a Family out of this. When in In-Place editing mode, select all the geometry (or any geometry, does not matter)

005Click on Create Group

Give it a descriptive name…

006

Then click the Application menu Save As Library

Click on Group – note that you will save the grouped geometry in the In-Place family with an *.rfa file extension

Step 4

Close everything and open the Family file you just created – now you have a true Family based stair that you can parameterize to your hearts content…  009
